City information
Set on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto was created on March 6, 1834, when the settlement of York was renamed Toronto, the Mohawk word for "meeting place." Toronto is a clean, safe, cosmopolitan city with a wonderful network of parks, recreational, and cultural facilities. Toronto is the home of four professional sports teams and the third largest English-speaking theatre district in the world, behind New York and London. One of the world's most ethnically diverse cities, it is home to more than 80 ethnic communities from Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Toronto, Canada's corporate capital and leading business address, is home to more nationally and internationally top-ranked companies than any other Canadian city. The city's business infrastructure makes modern business in Toronto seamless. In this era of inter-connected global business, Toronto, with one of the largest networks of fibre-optic cable of any North American city, has the technology and bandwidth to move information faster than the speed of modern business.
Toronto is home to the worlds tallest building (CN Tower at 553.33 m) and that the world's longest street starts at the City's lakeshore (Yonge Street at 1,896 km), but did you know that Toronto is as far south as the French Rivera or that more people live in Toronto than in Canada's four Atlantic provinces combined? Toronto gets over 16 million tourists per year (9 per cent of Canada's total arrivals).
