Victoria City Information
Founded in 1843 by the Hudson's Bay Fur Trading Company, the city of Victoria now has a population of more than 75,000. Greater Victoria, which comprises the four core municipalities of Victoria, Oak Bay, Saanich and Esquimalt, has a total population of about 308,000 (1994). A cosmopolitan city with a "small town atmosphere," there are few buildings over seven stories tall in Victoria. It is the capital city of British Columbia and the seat of the provincial government. Victoria's main industries today are government and tourism. Victoria is located on the southern tip-off Vancouver Island and is just 85 miles northwest of Seattle. With dozens of departures every day from the British Columbia mainland and Washington State, it's easy to get there by air, land and sea. In fact, a ferry voyage through some of the most beautiful waters and islands in the world is considered by many to be the highlight of their trip. Victoria is located in a "sub-Mediterranean" climatic zone and has moderate weather year-round. It boasts an average of 2,196 hours of sunshine annually and an eight-month frost-free season. Average temperature in January is 39°F and spring is early and mild. Summer is comfortably warm and dry with temperatures from 65-90°F.
