More About Detroit
Detroit, the City where you will discover a vibrant and diverse culture on the go. It offers attractions for everyone, from our zoo and museums to our exciting restaurants, nightlife, festivals and events.
Being the birthplace of the mass-production car industry and the Motown sound, has long had an image problem. The rise of the automobile industry propelled Detroit into an industrial power and was responsible for the cities enormous growth. It boasts a billion-dollar downtown development, ultramodern motor-manufacturing plants, some excellent museums and one of the nation's biggest art galleries.
However, it makes more sense to think of Detroit as a region rather than a European-style city and, so long as you plan your time and don't mind driving, it holds plenty to see and do. Segments like the huge Cultural Center, freewheeling Royal Oak, posh Birmingham, the Ford-town of Dearborn and even nearby Windsor, Ontario, and Ann Arbor, and a short drive west are must to visit.
Today, Detroit is undergoing renewed growth. The Theatre District is growing thanks to places such as the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Detroit Zoo also has undergone extensive improvements and is a big draw for visitors. The MGM Grand Casino and the Motor City Casino have found homes. And the Detroit Tigers have built a beautiful baseball stadium called Comerica Park. And last but not least, General Motors has moved back to the city into the Renaissance Center and is spending millions on improvements.
Detroit is a fun place to visit these days!
