A little about Rifle :
The population of Rifle is approximately 6784 and the location is 184 miles west of Denver off I-70. This community is located west of Glenwood Springs at the junction of Interstate 70 and Highway 13. Several state parks are nearby offering an abundance of outdoor activities. Spelunking is popular at Rifle Mountain Park's limestone caves, formed by a 50-foot waterfall.
At the base of the White River Plateau, about an hour northeast of Grand Junction, Rifle is where ranchers gather, deer and elk hunters talk guns, and campers stock up for adventures in the surrounding White River National Forest.
For maps and good information on the huge White River National Forest, stop by the Rifle Visitor Information Center at the 200 Lions Park Circle exit.
About 15 miles north of town, you'll come across the Rifle Gap State Park. Camping, fishing, and boating on the reservoir are popular here, as is spelunking next door at Rifle Mountain Park's limestone caves formed by a 50-foot waterfall.
For something besides roadside lodging, head about 20 miles northeast of town to the private, wooded Coulter Lake Guest Ranch; fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling are the activities of choice here
The Rifle Creek Museum, in the town's former city hall, exhibits area history with themed rooms that showcase everything from Native American artifacts to an old-fashioned general store. It's slim pickings for hungry travelers, but Audrey's Cafe should do the trick any time of day with a dollop of hometown service on the side.
