When visiting the capital city of Hawaii, you will find that Honolulu is the only area within North America to display a royal palace, as well as a host of other places and activities to enjoy.
Until the Europeans came, Honolulu was insignificant; soon so many foreign ships were frequenting its waters that it had become Kamehameha's capital, and it remains the economic center of the island. Honolulu became the most important shipping point in Hawaii. It flourished with the sandalwood export and then as a supply port for whalers. Sugar, pineapples, light manufacturing, tourism and defense installations followed as economic mainstays.
The Honolulu residents take great pride in the stunning fine art on display at the Academy of Arts. Downtown Honolulu is surprisingly small, set back a little from the sea and centering around a spacious plaza on King Street that includes Iolani Palace and the state capitol. When you reach Downtown Honolulu, you will find yourself within the center of Hawaii, filled with many governments, financial and commercial options to explore. Upon locating the waterfront, there is an attraction called the Aloha Tower which is one of the tallest structures within Hawaii. If you want to see the tallest building in the area, check out the First Hawaiian Center, which stands at 438 feet and can be found on King and Bishop Streets. Some of the best surfing can be enjoyed in the Kayaking region and the weather provides great opportunities for deep-sea fishing. Other exciting pursuits include scuba diving and snorkeling.
