More About Philadelphia
Philadelphia is the largest city of Pennsylvania and the fifth largest city in the United States. The name Philadelphia is translated from Greek means "City of Brotherly Love," is one of the most ethnically mixed US cities, with substantial communities of Italians, Irish, Eastern Europeans and Asians living side by side. It stretches for about two miles from the Schuylkill (pronounced School kill) River on the west to the Delaware on the east; the urban area extends for many miles to the north and south, but everything you're likely to want to see is right in the central swath. The original capital of the nation, Philadelphia was laid out by William Penn Jr. in 1682, on a network system that was to provide the pattern for most American cities. It was envisaged as a "green country town" and today, for all its historical and cultural significance, it still manages to retain certain quaintness. More recently, it voted in the nation's first black mayor, and has the country's best museum dedicated to African-American history and culture.
Philadelphia's historic landmarks and rich architecture attract many tourists each year. Independence Hall, Carpenters' Hall (the site of the First Continental Congress), the First and Second Banks of the United States, the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross House (where in 1777 the first American flag is reputed to have been made), and Christ Church (where Benjamin Franklin is buried) all lie within a few blocks of one another in the historic district.
Also located in the city is the Philadelphia Zoological Gardens (1876), one of the oldest zoos in the country, and Veterans Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Phillies major league baseball team and the Philadelphia Eagles football team. The Philadelphia Flyers hockey team and the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team both play at the CoreStates Center.
